Three words that best describe you as a candidate:

Gets things done.

Experience:

I served as Hennepin County Attorney (running our state’s largest prosecutors’ office) for eight years. In the Senate I rank number one for introducing bipartisan bills and third for passing bills into law last Congress. I’ve done significant work for the Brainerd Lakes area and focused on the rural economy.

Why are you running?

My top priority is getting things done to improve Minnesotans’ lives. I’m focused on finding common ground and delivering results on issues like lowering costs on prescription drugs, housing, and childcare; ensuring quality healthcare for our veterans; and building infrastructure and helping businesses start and expand in Crow Wing County.

What sets you apart from the other candidates?

I have a track record of working across the aisle to get things done, including bills allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices, expanding broadband, getting veterans the benefits they deserve, and boosting resources for our police and firefighters. I’m endorsed by Minnesota’s firefighters and police officers (MPPOA).

What are the top two or three issues facing the nation?

1. Bringing down the costs of health care, child care, and housing, and making sure they exist and are accessible in rural areas. 2. One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to needs in our rural and metro economies. We need to keep improving infrastructure and adding and expanding businesses in rural Minnesota. 3. Keeping people safe which means resources for police and fire, laws that work and facilities for offenders including drug treatment.

What are your plans to address those issues?

I led the bill to lower prescription drugs prices. I’m laser-focused on making sure it happens. My bipartisan legislation provides grants for child careworkers and building or renovating facilities in areas with shortages. I lead a bipartisan bill to improve housing access and reduce barriers to rural development. I’m pushing for apprenticeships, training, and 1- and 2-year degrees. I lead the COPS funding bill. I’ll continue to deliver infrastructure funding to Crow Wing County.

How would you prioritize area businesses, jobs and the economy?

Strong priority. As head of the Senate tourism caucus and Agriculture and Commerce Committees member, I’m focused on infrastructure in the Brainerd Lakes area and increasing small business access to capital. The National Federation of Independent Businesses has supported my work on competition and making the small business deduction permanent.

How would you address the school district’s budget needs?
